The trucking industry is the lifeblood of the North American economy. In fact, nearly all products purchased and consumed in Canada and the US are put on trucks and distributed to retail stores. As a result, the trucking industry in Canada is worth more than $27.8 billion in 2022.
Despite the significant growth, the trucking industry has witnessed its ups and downs in recent times. It all started with the COVID-19 pandemic that impacted fuel costs, freight charges, vaccine mandate for truckers, and more.
Fuel costs rose. In general, they rose due to the limited nature of the resource, in particular – due to the pandemic, natural disasters, and political turbulence happening in the world. As one of the biggest expenses that trucking companies have to incur, the rising fuel cost is a matter of concern. In fact, due to the rise in fuel costs and COVID-19 government regulations, the global market came to halt. The transportation industry was unable to move shipments quickly. And the growing shortage of experienced drivers was also a cause.
Besides fuel costs, another factor that increased freight charges is the February 2021 storm. The storm lasted two weeks. Most trucking companies choose to move freight in the southern part of the US in winter. However, most drivers do not have the experience to drive in snow, ice, and sleet. As such, they chose to park until the roads were safer. Many of the drivers who chose to drive through the weather arrived at the destination only to find the facilities shut down. This happened for various reasons, such as power outages. The longer they waited for the facilities to re-open, the more costs they incurred. This impacted freight charges.
In 2021, the Governments of Canada and the US introduced the mandatory vaccination of essential workers. This means that the only way a Canadian trucker can cross the border is to get vaccinated. As an industry, the majority complied. However, some expressed their displeasure and even went to protest blocking roads and key border crossings between the US and Canada.
In a letter to the protesters, the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) president asked them to engage in a peaceful demonstration. Meanwhile, the CTA is working with the government to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in the sector. All these developments and more will alter how the trucking industry will function in 2022 and beyond.
